Mayreau has it all... from the full comfort and US$360/480 per couple/night value of Saltwhistle Bay on the white, sandy beach to Robert Righteous's tiny US$40/night cottage in the original, local island village perched high atop the hillside ...to the nearby Tobago Cays.Tobago Cays courtesy Mustique Airways
Mayreau is the smallest (approx. 1.5 sq. miles) inhabited Grenadines with a population of approximately 300, all living in the village on the south-west side of the island. There is a trail from Saltwhistle Bay to the village that is currently being improved. The village boasts four bars and restaurants and colorful local rum shops with domino tournaments and pool tables. A sailboat and motor boat is available to charter to the nearby Tobago cays for some of the best diving and snorkeling in the Caribbean. Snorkeling equipment is available for rent. Hiking trails abound throughout the island with spectacular views of the neighboring Grenadines.

The Village.... after dropping anchor on Saline Bay, you dinghy over to the jetty. From the jetty you can see a winding, concrete road that looks like it goes "straight-up" to the small village located on the top. The total population of the island is approximately 300. There is no electricity on the island, unless you generate it yourself, so you will probably hear the hum of generators busy at work generating the soft glow lights and giving power to the stereo systems playing local, island music. As you climb the hill, it took me about 20-minutes, the village opens in front of you and you start seeing lovely, little island shops and businesses alongside the road.

Be sure to climb to the very top and work your way back down to Saltwhistle Bay at the bottom. The church and the view from the top are well worth the climb past the last business and then "over the hill a bit further."  Coming back from the church at the top of the road, you'll come to Island Paradise Restaurant & Bar.  The owner, James, will greet you and take you to your table. I never ate there but it was packed with visiting yachties so I would imagine the kitchen must be doing something right.  A few steps back down the hill brings you next to the J&C Bar & Restaurant.
Your host - Robert Righteous
A few steps more down brings you to Robert Righteous & de Youths Seafood Restaurant & Bar. Robert is a Rasta and his bar is a dedication to Bob Marley with walls covered with posters and other memorabellia.

Robert has a lovely cottage for rent. Give him a call at (1 784) 458-8203. Tell him You saw him on the Internet and send him and e-mail and ask him about his US$40/night cottage. It's really cute and fully functional.  Speaking of decor, I found the village abundant in the cosiest and cutest decorations of any throughout The Grenadines. Though the menus are simple the atmosphere and ambiance is just fantastic. I found the local chefs use way too much black pepper and you might want to so advise your own chefs to "go easy on it" as it overpowered my pumpkin soup and creole chicken.
